Use the crowd

I am not lazy, but I don't see the point in recreating content that is freely available.

The benefit of people constantly sharing is there is someone who has probably already created something you can use, at least for inspiration.

Business plan templates, social media policies, NDA agreements are all a Google search away.

Why waste time and money recreating what the crowd has provided, sure you need to customise details and check with experts etc, but at least you can save some time to focus on being exceptional.

Conformity

Stifles innovation and reduces the free thinking individual to a mindless work-a-day drone.

But it is SAFE! and that's the important thing, apparently.

Why push the boundaries, when you can sit in the middle and move with the herd.

I want to create the waves... if you aren't moving forward your moving backwards.

Damn the conventions, don't do it the way it has always been done, take risks and explore.

Otherwise just pull the plug and be done with it.

Juggling

Juggling is not easy, most people can only manage 2 or 3 things at once.

The secret to juggling balls or juggling work is that it is easier with more than one person.

If you have a lot of things in the air, ask for help and you will see an increase in success.

Don't let the rubber balls turn into chainsaws either, hand stuff off early!

Inside the tornado

I have been called a tornado often...

My wife calls me one when I arrive home or try to cook a meal.

Colleagues and friends call me one when I am at a conference or event.

I love having fun at parties and socialising with fantastic people.

Being the host is an important role and I want to ensure that everyone is having a good time and meeting new people.

The business karma generated from this is obvious, people always remember a fantastic evening or event and they link that experience to their host.

Life can be one fantastic party if you make it!

Managing the speedbumps

Projects all have them and you can't plan for all of them.

This is were the team you choose and the dynamic of the group plays a vital role.

I have worked on many projects with both internal and external parties.

By far the smoothiest ride has been with project teams who expect these hand grenades to appear at the worst possible time and just roll with it.

More time is wasted complaining and identifying why this situation happened than is spend fixing the issue.

Post project review and analysis is when the unforeseen issues should be reviewed.

For now roll with the punches and keep the project on track.

Digitally Stretched

I gritted my teeth in frustration as I had to sign into another social media platform today to link myself to a service.

I feel digitally stretched across a myriad of different digital platforms.

Keeping my details updated and my reputation sound across the selection of digital playgrounds I have joined is a lot of work.

Give me a single digital identity, which I can move across the virtual landscape and I will be a happy man.

Then allow my to use this identity in the "real world" via NFC or RFIDs or some other method.

"What about privacy!" I hear the laggards bleat.

Unless you are living like a hermit in a cave, privacy is a myth, we have been tracked by Governments, banks and corporations for decades. Seth Godin articulates this perfectly in his recent post http://bit.ly/yAIEVr

Social media has actually given us more visibility on what we do share and allows for some control.

Why Facebook will win in the end.

It is a question of focus.

Mark Zuckerberg's initial drive was to reinvent how people connect and share information.

Facebook continues to focus on the platform and coding and "hacking" to improve and expand the offering.

A glimpse into this philosophy can be found here

Meawhile, their competitors are building product offerings to compete with Facebook today. What they should be doing is focus on their own strengths (G+ should be making your Google life easier and Twitter should just keep offering fast, short and instant info.)

I am excited to see how far Facebook will influence our daily lives and hope Mark can stay true to his original goal.

Social media isn't always social

If you need to ensure your message is communicated quickly and shareable, social media may be able to support your digital and analogue channels.

Owning your voice online is vital and by developing bite sized content for others to spread is a legitimate tactic, as long as users are aware this is what the platform will deliver.

Not every brand needs to have a dialogue with their audience, sometimes if you deliver regular, valued content to improve another's digital reputation you are more important than the brand that wants to "engage".

The beauty of simplicity

Simple and elegant design is difficult.

The temptation is to add one more button, link, image etc

Sometimes it is less that really makes a design come to life.

I really like the clean and uncluttered look of the Square site  .

The site gives the impression that everything is done to maintain the minimalistic theme, which is also reflected in their technology.

What can you remove from you latest design?
